Missouri Southern tight end Keandre Bledsoe caught a touchdown pass and set the single-season MSSU record for receptions by a tight end, but the Lions fell 29-6 today to Emporia State inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
The Lions (2-8, 2-8 MIAA) were led by Bledsoe's day as he caught three passes for 84 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown pass. Bledsoe now has 35 receptions on the season, breaking the record of 33 held by Brent Cook in 1977.
Brian Boyd Jr. caught four passes for 83 yards, while Charles West had 15 carries for 59 yards. Sean Kelly went 9-for-22 passing for 142 yards and a touchdown, while Dwayne Lawson (2-for-10) and Jacob Park (3-for-8) also threw passes for the Lions on the day.
Paul Wolff had 13 punts in the game, breaking the previous record of 11 held by three different players. He averaged 43.3 yards on the day, had a long of 67 yards, and two punts inside the 20-yard line.
Defensively, Colton Winder had a game-high 16 tackles with an interception, while Richard Jordan Jr. and Malachi Broadnax had ten tackles each. Solomona Fetuao and Logan Vander Velden each had an interception, while the pair, as well as David Rose and Tyler Evans had tackles for a loss. Alex Alvarado had a fumble recovery, while Jamie Tago had three quarterback hurries.
The Hornets (3-7, 3-7 MIAA) were led by Carlos Grace with 23 carries for 176 yards and a score. Braden Gleason went 14-for-34 for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
ESU led 9-0 at halftime and a touchdown from Grace with ten minutes to go in the third quarter put the Hornets up 15-0. Bledsoe's touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter made the score 22-6.
The Lions will be back in action next week as the Lions finish off the regular season at Pittsburg State for the 2019 Miners Bowl. Kickoff from Carnie-Smith Stadium is set for 1 pm.
