MSSU men open season with 71-50 win over Winona State

Kansas City, Mo. -- The No. 10 ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team opened up the season with a 71-50 win over Winona State as part of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge inside historic Municipal Auditorium.

The Lions (1-0) were led offensively by Cam Martin as he went 14-of-17 from the field, scoring 32 points and adding 12 rebounds (seven offensive) in the game. Kinzer Lambert scored 24 points and added 12 rebounds, going 6-of-12 from beyond the arc, while Stan Scott scored ten points and Elyjah Clark added 11 rebounds.








Winona State (0-1) was led by ten points and six rebounds from Caleb Wagner.

The game was back-and-forth for the most part of the first half, but after Winona had got within three (15-12) a layup from Lambert with 3:29 to go started a 12-4 run for the Lions to close the half as Southern led 27-16 going into the locker room.

The Lions opened up the half on a 15-6 run and led 42-22 after a layup from Martin with 15 minutes on the clock. The lead hovered around 20 points, until a an 12-0 run by the Lions over a four-minute stretch gave Southern a 33-point lead (67-34) after a dunk from Lambert with 5:40 to go in the game.

Southern shot 41 percent from the field in the game and 50 percent in the second half. The Lions out rebounded Winona State 59-36 in the game and had 14 assists on 29 made buckets.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 12 pm tip off against Minnesota State. The Mavericks lost their opener to Washburn in overtime.
