MSSU volleyball loses in five sets to Emporia State

Emporia, Kan. -- Missouri Southern junior hitter Janelle Brehm had a match-high 24 kills to go with 19 digs, but the Lions couldn't complete the comeback, falling on the road at Emporia State, three sets to two tonight. Individual set scores were 20-25, 25-20, 23-25, 25-18 and 8-15.

The Lions (13-14, 6-11 MIAA) were led by Brehm's night as she netted 26.5 points. Morgan Nash had a double-double with 32 assists and 12 digs, while Emalee Lowe had 15 digs and Brooklynn McCain added 13 of her own. Kierson Maydew had six blocks, while Alicia Pickett and Brehm had five each.








ESU (7-18, 3-14 MIAA) had four players in double-figure kills, led by 18 from Yuchen Du.

Set one was back-and-forth until Emporia State went on a 5-1 run to lead 12-8 early on. The Hornets led 17-9 later to force another Southern timeout, but a 4-2 run from the Lions forced an Emporia State timeout. the Lions got as close as four (23-19), but ESU closed it out.

The Lions responded back and opened up a 16-12 lead in set two to force an ESU timeout, and Southern went on a 7-4 run to lead 23-16 to force another Hornets' timeout. ESU got as close as four (24-20) but a kill from CC Pollard sealed the set.

ESU took set three in a back-and-forth affair and the Lions won set four to force a deciding fifth set. Southern opened up a 12-2 lead, forcing two ESU timeouts in the first 12 points of the set. The Lions cruised to the victory as Brehm sealed it with a kill.

ESU opened the fifth set on a 6-2 run, forcing a Lions' timeout and the Hornets led 8-5 at the turn. A 4-2 run by ESU gave the Hornets an 11-7 run to force another Lions' timeout and ESU scored four of the final five points to take the match.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow as Southern travles to No. 3 ranked Washburn for a 6 pm start from Lee Arena.
