Arkadelphia, Ark. - Senior guard Destiny Cozart scored a career-high 28 points on 8-for-13 from behind the arc in Missouri Southern State's loss to Henderson State by a final score of 81-78 inside the Duke Wells Center Tuesday night.

Down by three and 2:47 to go in regulation, sophomore Amber Buch scored a layup and a free throw to force the Lions (2-5) into a 73-73 tie with HSU. The Reddies (5-1) responded with a small 5-0 run on their way to securing the three-point win and sweep the season series.

Senior forward Chasidee Owens added 19 points and seven rebounds while junior center Zoe Campbell recorded her second career double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams pushed the pace in the first period by trading baskets left and right toward four ties, including a 12-12-draw heading into the first media timeout. Defending Conference champions Fort Hays State was picked to win the conference again with ten first-place votes as well as earn a ranking of fifth by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). Central Missouri followed in second of the MIAA coaches' poll and is currently receiving votes. Washburn (3), Pittsburg State (4), and Emporia State (5) rounded out the top five.

Send It Back

One goal that coach Ressel set for the Lions heading into the season was to improve on defense. Thus far as opponents try to shoot from the paint, the Lions have been preventing many shots from even reaching the rim with 44 combined blocks and 7.33 average per contest for first and fourth in the national respectively.

Both marks also place them first among MIAA programs with
Northwest Missouri State trailing by 20 (24) in second.

Front and Center

After observing as a freshman and figuring things out on the court as a sophomore, junior center Zoe Campbell from Caloundra, Australia has become a force in the front court. Campbell ranks second and third in total blocks (24) and blocks per game (4.0) while leading the MIAA in both categories.

The Australia native currently stands fourth all-time in career blocks (75) and set the school record for blocks in one game (7) at Harding. She is also fourth in the MIAA in field-goal percentage (32-for-56 = .571) and sixth in rebounds per game (8.7).

Take the Long Way Home

Another dimension on the defense that MSSU wanted to sure up was around the perimeter and the team has certainly done its job by limiting opponents to 29.2-clip on 106 attempts from three-point range, which ranks sixth in the MIAA at three-point field-goal defense.

The Lions defense is also ranked fifth in total field-goal defense by holding opponents to 36.3 percent shooting from the field on 394 attempts.

NCAA Individual Stat Leaders

Cam Martin is 24th in scoring and 29th in field goal percentage, while Kinzer Lambert is 16th in three pointers per game and 31st in three point percentage.

Streak Stopper

Coming into last season Elyjah Clark had made a three pointer in 47-straight games, dating back to his freshman season. Clark, however, missed out on a three in the first game of the year, but has made a three in each game since, taking his current streak to 35.

Cam You Score A Lot?

Cam Martin tied a MSSU single-game record with 49 points at Minnesota State in 2018-19. The mark tied Carl Tyler from 1984. Martin nearly set the NCAA Tournament scoring record against Washburn in 2019 as he finished with 46 points, eight off the record of 54.

Cam You Score A lot II

Cam Martin put himself amongst the Missouri Southern single-season scoring leaders as he became only the second Lion to ever score 700 or more points, joining Taevaunn Prince in that category last season. He finished with 720 which is the second most scored in a single-season at MSSU.

The Century Mark

Jeff Boshcee won his 100th career game at Missouri Southern against Washburn in the NCAA Tournament. He became the quickest to 100 wins in MSSU history. The previous mark was Frank Davis who reached 100 wins in 161 games. Boschee did it in 152 games.

Three-Point Streak

The Lions failed to make a three-pointer at Arkansas Tech in their match-up in 2012-13. It was the first time in 403 games that Southern had failed to hit a three pointer, dating back to Jan. 20, 1999 against Missouri S&T. The Lions have had a three in 209-straight games since Arkansas Tech in 2012-13.

Perfection

For just the third time in program history, the Lions went perfect at home during the 2018-19 season (13-0). Only the 1969-70 (11-0) and the 1999-2000 (18-0) teams were also perfect at home. The Lions are 54-12 in Jeff Boschee's tenure at home.

Home Sweet Home

Missouri Southern can count on some of the best fan support in Division II. This season, the Lions rank 8th nationally in home attendance, averaging 1,437 fans per game. That number is best in the MIAA.

National Ranking

The Lions are ranked No. 7 in the NABC poll this week and 9th in the D2SID's Poll. In the history of the NABC Poll, the Lions have been ranked 64 times, including 23 consecutive weeks. The team has been No. 1 once (in the 2011 season).

Record-Breaking Sniper

Junior Elyjah Clark already has the Missouri Southern single-season record for three pointers with 110. Clark broke the career record against Fort Hays State last weekend and has 295 career three pointers now as a junior. With one season left to play, Clark now can target the MIAA record of 370.

Reachin' A Grand

Elyjah Clark went over 1,000 points in his career with 18 points against Minnesota-Crookston in 2018-19. He currently has 1,434 in his career and is the 22nd person in MSSU history to crack the 1,000 point plateau. Clark has moved into 9th place all-time, passing Matt Olson against Northwest Missouri in the 18-19 season finale. Next up is Chris Tucker with 1,520 points for 8th place.

Elyjah For Three

Clark has the top-two single-season three-point totals in MSSU history and his 295 threes made in his three-plus year career rank first. His career three-point percentage of .395 is tied for third-best all-time, while he also tied the single-game record for three's made with nine. He has the season and career record for three pointers per game, while also holding the MSSU season and career record for consecutive games with a three (47).

Up Next

The Lions will come back home to take on Culver-Stockton College on November 29. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 7 pm.
