Pickett records 29 kills as MSSU volleyball sweeps pair

Joplin, Mo. -- Alicia Pickett had 18 kills in one match and 11 in another as the Missouri Southern Volleyball team swept a pair of matches in the opening day of the 2017 Towneplace Suites Invitational.

The Lions defeated Chadron State in five sets to open the tournament. Individual set scores were 22-25, 25-17, 25-21 27-29 and 15-9.

Bailey Rexford led the offensive attack in the match with a career-high 21 kills, while hitting .319. Pickett had 18 kills and nine blocks, while hitting .412 in the match. Janelle Brehm had 17 kills and 15 digs, while Morgan Nash dished out 58 assists and pulled in 11 digs.

The Lions hit .267 in the match and had 12 team blocks.

In the second match of the day, Southern swept Maryville in three sets. Individual set scores were 25-16, 25-12 and 25-14. Brehm and Sydney Dose had 13 kills each, while Brehm hit .444. Pickett had 11 kills and hit .688, while Nash had a double-double with 40 assists and 10 digs.

The Lions hit .430 as a team and had five team blocks on the night.

Southern will close out the tournament tomorrow with a match at 11 am against Ouachita Baptist and a duel with Arkansas Tech at 6:30 pm.
