Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern soccer team led visiting Southwest Baptist in every offensive category, but couldn't find the back of the net and lost a hard luck match, 2-0 tonight at home to the Bearcats.
The Lions (0-3-2) outshot the Bearcats (2-2-1) 8-4 in what was a non-conference game for both teams. The Lions had a 4-3 advantage in shots on goal and had four corner kicks to the Bearcats zero.
Southern had two shots in the first three minutes, the second coming on goal from Sarah Tatum. Taylor LePage got a shot on goal at the 11 minute mark and another save for the Bearcats' Ashlyn Gibbs helped stop the Lions' pressure.
The half ended with the Lions trailing 1-0.
Southern got another two quick shots to start the second half, both from Taylor Beck and Gibbs again saved the second one. A goal from Tessa Wagner of SBU off a cross from AC Pettit put SBU up 2-0 in the 54th minute.
Beck led the Lions with two shots, one on goal, while LePage had two shots with one on goal. Tatum and Mikayla Hutchison had a shot on goal each, while Julia Liberty had a shot of her own.
Hannah Stevenson started and allowed a goal in the first half, moving to 0-2-1 on the season. Luz Galindo played the second half and made one save.
