MSSU soccer falls in season opener

Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern soccer team got a goal from Tayler LePage, but couldn't get past two early Rockhurst goals and the Lions fell 3-1 tonight in the season-opener at Hal Bodon Field.

Southern (0-1) had eight shots, five on goal in the game. LePage had four shots of her own, three on goal and picked up goal number one on the season. Mikayla Hutchison had an assist and a shot on goal, while Maria Sturlson had a shot on goal, as well. Brianna Smith and Taylor Beck had a shot of their own.

Rockhurst (1-0) got a goal just two minutes in from Maddie Dierkes off an assist from Kaley Nieters. Nieters then scored a goal of her own in the 20th minute, before LePage's goal in the 34th minute. The teams went into the break with the Hawks leading 2-1.

Rockhurst got a third goal, this time from Jessica Smelcer, in the 55th minute.

The Hawks outshot the Lions 17-8 in the game and had a 9-5 advantage in shots on goal.

The Lions will be back in action this Sunday when Southern plays host to William Jewell at 3 pm on Hal Bodon Field.
