MSSU volleyball splits two matches in Townplace Suites Invitational

The Missouri Southern volleyball team split a pair of matches on the final day of the 2017 Towneplace Suites Invitational, beating Ouachita Baptist in four sets to open the day, but falling in three to Arkansas Tech in the finale.

In the Lions' first match of the day, Southern (5-3) took out previously undefeated Ouachita Baptist (7-1) three sets to one. Individual set scores were 25-16, 25-22, 20-25 and 25-13.

Janelle Brehm had 19 kills and hit .386, while Bailey Rexford had 19 kills and hit .385 to lead the offensive attack for the Lions. Alicia Pickett had 13 kills and hit .478 with five blocks. Morgan Nash had a double-double with 51 assists and 11 digs, hitting .500 for the match. Kat Gries had nine digs, while Teryn Scott and Marija Milivojev had eight digs each.

The Lions hit .370 as a team and had seven blocks.

In the second match, the Lions ran into a hot-hitting Arkansas Tech (9-0) team as the Golden Suns hit .500 in the match to defeat the Lions in three. Individual set scores were 17-25, 21-25 and 18-25.

The Lions were led offensively by Mikayla Monk with ten kills and a .588 attack percentage. Morgan Nash had 26 assists, while Milivojev had seven digs. Alicia Pickett had six kills and four blocks.

Southern will be back in action next weekend when the Lions travel to the Southern Nazarene Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
