St. Joseph, Mo. - The Missouri Southern football team committed four costly turnovers and the Lions fell 45-7 tonight at Missouri Western in football action.
Southern (0-2, 0-2 MIAA) got a solid game from tight end Josiah Bennett as the sophomore caught three passes for 60 yards and a score, including a long reception of 41 yards. Kene Anigbogu, picked up his first receiving yards as a Lion as he caught five passes for 53 yards. Josh Hadley nearly cracked the century mark as he carried the ball 16 times for 92 yards.
Defensively, Alexander Wade again led the charge with 11 stops in the game. Clint Sills Jr. had seven tackles, including two for a loss of six yards and a sack, while Patrick Cheek had five tackles and an interception.
Western (1-1, 1-1 MIAA) shared duties at quarterback, with Dom Marino going 6-9 for 110 yards and two scores, and Corey Bertini going 4-6 for 47 yards and a score. Josh Caldwell rushed for 142 yards on 14 carries and had three touchdowns.
Southern started with the ball, but went three and out to force a punt on its first possession.
The Griffons scored on their first possession and both teams punted on their next possession. After Western got the ball back late in the first, the Lions' defense stopped the Griffons when Western went for it on fourth-and-two, but came up short.
An interception on the Lions' ensuing possession set up the Griffons inside the Lions' 40-yard line and Western would take just two plays to go up 14-0 after one quarter.
Both teams punted on their first three possessions of the second and a fumble from the Lions set up the Griffs for a quick score from Caldwell to make the score 21-0 late in the half.
An interception from Cheek with just under a minute left gave the Lions the ball and a chance for points as the half was ending. The drive stalled at the Western 27-yard line, setting up a 44-yard field goal attempt from Brock Renken. The kick was blocked as time expired to make the score 21-0 at the half.
The Griffons scored twice quickly to start the second half and a 28-yard kick from Tyler Basch was good with eight minutes left to make the score 38-0, Griffons.
On the ensuing drive, the Lions worked their way inside Griffon territory, but a sack forced a fumble and ended the drive.
The Lions got the ball back near the end of the third quarter and a pair of passes from Vandeven to Bennett, 41 and 11 yards, the latter going for a touchdown made the score 38-7 with 14:29 left in the fourth.
Western added one more score to make the final tally 45-7.
The Lions will be back in action next Saturday when Southern plays host to 15th-ranked Emporia State. The game will see the induction of four new members into the MSSU Hall of Fame and will kick off at 6 pm from Fred G. Hughes Stadium inside the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.
