Pittsburg, Kan. -- A six-run, sixth inning helped doom the Lions as Pittsburg State defeated the Lions 13-7 tonight in MIAA baseball action.
Southern (21-22, 13-16 MIAA) was led offensively by Joe Paulino and Dave Prost as Paulino went 2-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Prost went 3-5 with 3 RBIs and a run scored. Both had home runs in the game. Max Hogan went 3-5 with a run scored, while Richie Gorski was 3-4 with a run scored.
Seth Mesey started and went two and a two-thirds of an inning, while Cody Smith threw the same two and two-thirds. Dan Hawk threw an inning and two-thirds, while Trenton Moeller threw the final inning. Smith got the loss and moved to 6-5 on the season.
PSU (18-22, 12-14 MIAA) got four RBIs from TJ Martin and three from Andrew Vogelbaugh. Cooper Gardner got the win to move to 7-1 on the year.
Southern led 4-1 after two innings. A Prost homer in the first and a Paulino homer in the second led to the runs.
The Gorillas, however, scored five in the third and one in the fourth to go up 7-4 after four innings.
Prost and Paulino had RBIs in the sixth that led to a three-run inning for the Lions to tie the score at seven going into the bottom of the sixth.
Pitt, however, scored six in the bottom half of the inning to put the game aaway.
The Lions will be back in action this weekend with a three-game series at Fort Hays State.
