Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team fell behind 7-0 and couldn't climb back as the Lions fell 9-3 in MIAA action against Pittsburg State at Warren Turner Field.
The Lions (20-19, 12-13 MIAA) were led offensively by a 2-3 day at the plate from Max Hogan as he scored a run and had his 14th double of the season. Richie Gorski was hit by a pitch three times on the night and had an RBI double, his 11th of the season, while Todd Hinkley drove in a pair. Alec Alvarez had a run scored, while Danny Biggs had a hit.
Will Bausinger started and fell to 2-4 in the season as he went two and a third innings. Zach Litchen threw two and a third, with three strikeouts, while Hayden Brauser threw two and two thirds of an inning, limiting the Gorillas to just two hits. Colin Chandler and Trenton Moeller threw the final inning and two thirds.
Pitt (14-22, 8-14 MIAA) got three hits from Chase Kilgore and a home run from Dallas Reed.
The Gorillas scored a run in the first, two in the second, a single run in each of the third and fourth, before adding two more in the top of the fifth to go up 7-0 heading into the bottom half of the inning.
The Lions answered with three in the bottom half when Hogan led off the inning with a single to left. Hogan moved up on a ground out and after Alvarez reached on a dropped third strike, the Lions went to work. Gorski doubled down the right field line and over the fence for a ground-rule, scoring Hogan. Hinkley then followed that with single to left center to score both Gorski and Alvarez.
Pitt added two more runs in the eighth to put the game away.
The Lions will be back in action on Thursday night as Southern plays host to Central Missouri to start a three-game MIAA series. First-pitch is slated for 6 pm from Warren Turner Field.
