Pittsburg, Kan. -- Missouri Southern thrower Bryan Burns set a new school record and punched his ticket to nationals as the men's track and field team competed at Pittsburg State today.
Burns hit an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 184-06 in the discus today, breaking the previous school record by two feet set two years ago by Nicklas Polizzi. The mark is third nationally and tops in the MIAA this season.
In other action, Burns and Garrett Austin placed 10th and 11th in the hammer throw, and Burns was second in the shot put with a provisional distance of 56-08.50.
Kennan Harrison won the triple jump with a distance of 49-04.25, while Brendan Watkins was third in a distance of 46-08.00. Harrison was 10th in the long jump while Chance Johnson placed 11th.
Zach Wuest was sixth in the pole vault with a provisional height of 15-08.25, while Dean Howard and Morgan Hold placed 11th and 13th. Cody Vogt won the high jump with a provisional height of 6-08.00.
Kyle Parr was 11th in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.05, while Victor Encarnacion was 15th in the 800m. Thomas Hawkins placed second in the 400m dash in a time of 49.20, while the 400m relay team of Keson Payton, Hawkins, Watkins and Dausen Gourley placed fifth. The team of Mike Watson, Hold, Vogt and Jordyn Manier placed seventh.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend when Southern is in two locations at the KU Relays and Missouri S&T.
