Joplin, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team utilized an 11-run third inning en route to a 16-3 run-rule win over visiting Pittsburg State today in Joplin at Warren Turner Field.
The Lions (25-22, 17-16 MIAA) got four RBIs from Alec Alvarez as he had a pair of two-run doubles in the third inning. He scored twice in the game. Danny Biggs, Tyler Sutherland, Dave Prost, and Mike Million all had two hits each, while Max Hogan, Biggs and Million drove in two each.
Sutherland hit his eighth home run of the year and Hogan hit his 13th as the Lions have 67 on the season, breaking the school record for home runs in a season which was 66 set last season.
Colin Chandler started and went five innings, striking out six and allowing just one run on five hits to move to 5-1 on the season. Zach Litchen threw two innings in relief.
The Gorillas (20-24, 14-16 MIAA) got a pair of hits each from Dallas Reed and Hunter Clanin.
The game was scoreless until the third inning when the Lions batted around and scored 11 runs. Alvarez's RBI doubles highlighted the inning. Million, Gorski, and Biggs had RBIs in the inning with Million and Biggs getting two each.
Pitt got a run back in the fifth, but the Lions got Sutherland's homer in the bottom half of the inning, as well as a home run from Hogan and a two-RBI triple from Prost in the sixth.
The Gorillas scored two unearned runs in the seventh, but it would not be enough.
The Lions will be off this weekend, but will be back in action on May 5-7 when Southern closes the regular-season with a home series with Northeastern State.
