MSSU golf competing in MIAA Championships

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Spring Hill, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Men's Golf team enters the MIAA Championships at the Sycamore Ridge Golf Club in seventh place in the league standings.

The MIAA Championships will be a three day, 54 hole tournament, with 18 holes played each day. The Lions are just four points behind third place Lindenwood entering the double points event.

Making the trip for head coach Mike Wheeler will be junior Connor Neil, senior Taylor Lansford, sophomore Tripper Jensen, senior Cameron Hamilton, and sophomore Tristan Haltom. "Weather looks good tomorrow [Monday] and Tuesday," said Wheeler. "We need to take advantage of that to improve our regional standing. The boys are loose and ready to go, it should be a fun 54 hole tournament."

Neil has led Southern in the last three events with a second place finish, after a play off hole, at the St. Edward's Invitational and a third place finish at the Southern Bancorp Invitational. Last week Neil was the top MSSU finisher at the Tiger Classic, a MIAA points event, with a share of 23rd and he currently sits in 30th place in the MIAA Individual standings with 0.33 points. Neil is also currently ranked 23rd in the Central Region.

Lansford is making his 11th tournament of the season for Southern and is averaging 74.3 per round in the 25 rounds of play this season. Lansford is currently in ninth place in the MIAA Individual standings with 14.5 points and is currently ranked 21st in the Central Region.

Jensen is making his second straight appearance for The Green & Gold after shooting a season best 74 in the final round of the Tiger Classic last week at Smoky Hill Country Club. Jensen is averaging 78.8 per round in just nine rounds of play this season.

Hamilton is back on the road again this week after a week off and will be in action for the eighth time this season. Hamilton is averaging 75.6 in 18 rounds and is currently ranked 49th in the Central Region. Cameron tied his season low, 71, in the opening round of the Southern Bancorp Invitational and finished with his third best 54 hole score of 228.

Haltom has seen limited action this spring, only playing in the weather shortened Washburn Invitational. In eight rounds of action in 2016-17, Haltom is averaging 76.8 per round and earned his MIAA points with a 14th place finish at the UNK Invitational in the fall season.

Southern will be playing with Lincoln and Missouri Western during first round. The group will tee off at 9:20 a.m. off hole 10. Live results for the MIAA Championships can be found at mssulions.com or by clicking HERE.
