MSSU men's golf to close regular season play at Tiger Classic

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern Men's Golf team will close their 2016-17 regular season at the Tiger Classic, a MIAA points event, hosted by Fort Hays State at Smoky Hill Country Club Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

After taking a week off last week Southern remains ranked 10th in the NCAA Central Region headed into their final regular season tournament. The Tiger Classic will be the final MIAA points event before the MIAA Championships next week at Sycamore Ridge Golf Club in Spring Hill, Kansas.

Comprising the team for Southern this week will be junior Connor Neil, senior Taylor Lansford, freshman Chase Rogers, sophomore Tripper Jensen, and junior Carter Towey.

Neil looks to continue his hot streak that started at the St. Edward's Invitational that has seen him shoot below par in four of the last six rounds with two of those rounds in the 60s including a career low 66 in the second round in Austin, Texas. Neil is currently ranked 23rd in the Central Region after finishing those last two tournaments in a tie for first and in third place in the individual standings. Neil is currently tied for 22nd in the MIAA individual standings.

Lansford is currently ranked 21st in the Central Region and is coming off a share of eighth place at the Southern Bancorp Invitational. Taylor finished the St. Edward's Invitational at Onion Creek Country Club in a tie for 12th but with a season second best of 214 including a 69 in the final round of play. Lansford enters the Tiger Classic tied for sixth in the MIAA Individual standings with 14.5 points in the two previous MIAA points tournaments.

Rogers is making his eighth appearance as a member of the team at the Tiger Classic and is coming off his best finish of his freshman season with a share of 15th at the Southern Bancorp Invitational where he tied his season low three round score of 224. In the opening round of the tournament, Rogers shot his first collegiate round under par with a 1-under 71.

Jensen is making just his fourth appearance of the 2016-17 season and his second of the spring following the weather shortened Washburn Invitational, while Towey is making his Southern debut at the Tiger Classic.

The 54-hole tournament will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start Tuesday, with teams playing two rounds on day one. Round three will take place on Wednesday, with groups teeing off holes 1 and 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The final pairing is scheduled to take to the course at 10:20 a.m.

All 11 MIAA men's golf programs will be in attendance, including seven of the top 10 teams in the Central Region.
