Joplin, Mo. - A no-doubt home run form Max Hogan in the eighth helped complete the comeback win for the Missouri Southern baseball team as the Lions defeated the Central Missouri Mules 9-7 in the series finale Saturday.
Southern (21-21, 13-15 MIAA) hit four home runs on the day, none bigger and longer than Hogan's as he went 1-2 at the plate with three walks, two runs scored and two driven in. Mike Million went 2-3 with a home run, a double, three driven in and two runs scored. Joe Paulino went 1-2 with a home run, two RBI and a run scored, while Cory Canterbury hit a home run and scored twice. Danny Biggs scored a run and added a hit, as well.
The Lions got a solid game on the mound from Sean Goostree as the senior went five and two thirds, striking out five and walking just two, while allowing only three earned runs. Cody Smith threw the final three and a third, shutting out the Mules and allowing just two hits, while striking out five and walking none to move to 6-4 on the season.
Central (25-12, 16-9 MIAA) got three RBIs from Travis Able and three hits from Collin Nevil.
After Central went up 1-0 in the first, the Lions got home runs from Canterbury and Paulino sandwiched between a double from Million to go up 3-1 after two.
The Mules scored six runs in the sixth inning, only two of which were earned, and went up 7-3 going into the bottom of the sixth. Million's home run in the sixth added two runs and a wild pitch scored Hogan in the seventh before Million drove in another with a sacrifice fly.
Southern then added the equalizer in the eighth. Biggs was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and moved to second on a wild pitch. Trevor Burkdoll moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt and Hogan's blast, the 11th of the season for the lefty, gave the Lions the win.
Southern will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Pittsburg State to take on the Gorillas. First pitch is slated for 6 pm.
