Zach Parish strikes out 15 in MSSU 's 7-1 win over Fort Hays State

The 19th-ranked Missouri Southern baseball program scored four in the first inning and Zach Parish struck out 15 over six innings as the Lions took the opening game, 7-1 over visiting Fort Hays State today at Warren Turner Field.

Southern (16-6, 8-2 MIAA) got a stellar day on the mound from Parish as the lefty went six innings, striking out 15 and shutting out the Tigers on just three hits. Bradly Hershey, Logan VanWey and River Wright threw in relief.

Fort Hays State (2-16, 2-8 MIAA) had five batters with a hit each, while Cody Starkel scored the lone run.

The Lions went on top 4-0 after one as Southern started things off with an RBI single from Denver Coffee, scoring Dexter Swims. Freddie Landers was then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Troy Gagan, while Jon Leighton drove in both Mike Million and Coffee.








Davin Gummere had a sacrifice fly in the fourth to score Landers and then after the Tigers had put across a run in the bottom of the seventh, the Lions got it back in the eighth with a pinch-hit RBI double from Alex Phillips, scoring Landers. Matt Miller added an RBI single scoring Coffee in the ninth to cap the scoring for the Lions.

Landers went 3-for-4 in the game with a pair of runs and an RBI. Leighton and Coffee had wo hits each, while Leighton drove in two and Coffee scored twice.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 1 pm first-pitch from Turner Field.
