Brehm double-double not enough as MSSU volleyball falls to Northwest Missouri

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Janelle Brehm had ten kills and ten digs, while hitting .292, but the Missouri Southern Volleyball team fell three sets to none today to No. 11 Northwest Missouri inside Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 17-25, 18-25 and 20-25.

Brehm led the Lions (8-6, 1-3 MIAA) attack while Morgan Nash had eight kills and six digs. Kylee Kaaihue had 13 assists, while Shaylon Sharp added seven kills and eight digs. CC Pollard and Emalee Lowe had six digs each.

Northwest (11-1, 4-0 MIAA) was led by Morgan Lewis with 13 kills and a .522 attack average.

Northwest opened up set one on a 6-0 run before a kill from Brehm stopped the streak. The Lions went on an 8-5 run of their own, capped by a block from Brehm and Alicia Pickett to cut the lead to three (13-10), but that would be as close as the Lions would get.

Set two was back-and-forth and saw five tied scored and three lead changes. With the set tied at eight, Northwest went on an 8-2 run to open up a 16-10 lead. The Lions got within four (19-15) after blocks from Pickett and Sharp, but couldn't complete the comeback.

In set three, the Lions jumped out to an 8-6 lead after a kill from Pickett, but the Bearcats turned it around with a 6-3 run to lead 12-9. Southern then got within two (16-14) after a kill from Brehm and within three (23-20) after a kill from Sharp, but Northwest closed it out.

Southern will be back in action on Tuesday night when the Lions travel to Central Oklahoma to take on the Bronchos. First-serve is slated for 7 pm.
