Six MSSU football players receive MIAA honors

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern football team had six student-athletes named All-MIAA today as the league announced its post season awards.

Offensive linemen Matt Griffin and Mike Dzierzega, along with defensive lineman Levi Marly, linebacker Akel Beard, defensive back Korenzo Credit and punter Riley Hathorn all earned honorable mention honors this season.

This season, Hathorn ranked 38th nationally and sixth in the MIAA in punting as he averaged 40.7 yards per punt, while breaking the MSSU single-season record with 83 punts this year.

Griffin and Dzierzega helped lead an offensive line that ranked 38th nationally in tackles for a loss allowed (fewest), as well as 39th in sacks allowed (fewest).

Marlay finished the season with 31 tackles after starting in all 11 contests for the Lions. Beard was third on the team with 61 tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, three pass break ups and one forced fumble. Beard was one of eight different Lions that had a forced fumble this year.

Korenzo Credit helped lead the defensive backfield as the junior finished with 25 tackles, a team-high three interceptions and five pass break ups.

Braxton Marstall from Emporia State was the Offensive Player of the Year, while Jose Delgado from Fort Hays State was the Defensive Player of the Year. Fort Hays State's Dante Brown was the Special Teams Player of the Year, while Braden Wright of Northwest Missouri was the Freshman of the Year.
