(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

San Juan, P.R. - The Missouri Southern women's basketball team tipped off the 2018 Puerto Rico Classic with a 10-point win over host University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras Tuesday afternoon.

The Lions (3-2) outrebounded Rio Piedras a grand total of 56-13 as the team remained aggressive in finding and battling for the ball to match UPR-RP's intensity throughout the contest toward a 20-2 advantage in second chance points as well.

Junior forward Jordan Schoenberger went on a tear by grabbing a team-high 15 rebounds in 26 minutes, making use of her sizeable height advantage against all-comers in the paint. She also added 15 points on 7 of 9 shooting from the field towards her first double-double in the green and gold.

Senior guard Chelsey Henry paced the Lions with 18 points in 32 minutes on the floor and junior swing-player Chasidee Owens added nine points and 11 rebounds in the win.

MSSU jumped out to a 15-10 advantage to close out the first period and increased its lead to 13 heading into halftime (38-25). UPR-RP (0-1) responded on a 14-4 run to get within six midway through the third and would entirely outscore the Lions in the second half 37-34, but ultimately fell short as the Lions dribbled the clock out.

UPR-RP Guard Paola Maldonado registered a game-high 20 points on 50-percent shooting (8-for-14 FG; 4-for-6 3FG) in 30 minutes as a starter.

Southern is back in action tomorrow for an 11:00 am local time/9:00 am Central time match up against Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico to conclude its end of the 2018 Puerto Rico Classic.
