Lambert's driving layup lifts MSSU men to 100-98 overtime win over Minnesota State

Mankato, Minn. -- Kinzer Lambert hit a driving layup with less than two seconds left in overtime and the 25th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team defeated Minnesota State 100-98 today in overtime as part of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge.

Southern (1-1) got another huge game from Cam Martin as he scored 49 points on 18-of-24 with ten rebounds for a double-double. He went 12-of-16 from the free throw line and added two assists, a block and a steal. Lambert scored 25 points and added three assists, while Elyjah Clark scored 13 and pulled down five rebounds. Clark had three three pointers on the day and went over 200 in his career, sitting at 202 now.



This was the third-straight game decided in overtime between the two teams.

MSU (1-1) had five score in double-figures, led by 23 points from Carlos Anderson.

A layup from Martin with 13:22 left in the first half gave the Lions a 16-10 lead and a layup from Clark with 11:12 left kept the lead at six (21-15). A pair of three's and then a tip in from the Mavericks' Kevin Krieger, gave MSU a five-point lead with 6:43 to go in the half.

A layup from Martin tied the game at 32 with 3:41 left , but a layup from Anderson gave the Mavericks a 43-37 lead at the break.

MSU led by seven (63-56) with 11:54 left in the second half, but a pair of free throws from Lambert started a 10-1 run for the Lions that saw Southern take a 66-64 lead with 9:51 to go in regulation.

The teams traded points before a pair of free throws from Martin put the Lions up four (74-70) with 7:42 left. A three from Anderson, however, tied the game at 74 and a jumper from Martin pushed the lead for the Lions to four (88-84) with 1:31 left in regulation. Free throws from Krieger and a layup from Anderson tied the game and forced overtime.

Five quick points to start overtime had the Mavs up 93-88 with 3:45 left, but a 9-1 run by the Lions, capped by a three from Clark gave the Lions a 97-94 lead with 1:18 left. A jumper from Anderson tied the game at 98 with 12 seconds left, but Lambert's running layup in the final seconds gave the Lions the win.

Southern show 48 percent from the field and 84 percent from the free throw line. The Lions had a 42-34 advantage in the paint.

Southern will be back in action next Thursday, November 15 as the Lions travel to St. Louis to take on Missouri-St. Louis. Tip off from the Mark Twain Building is slated for 7 pm.
