The Missouri Southern women's soccer team landed five players on the 2018 All-MIAA squad in a release this week.
Senior defenders Jeannine Escobar and Maria Sturluson, midfielders Alex McCord and Julia Liberty along with freshman forward Bailey Belcher all secured Honorable Mention recognition for the Lions as the season came to a close.
Escobar and Sturluson both played in all 16 matches, combining for 2,532 minutes in the back field and assisting in three shutouts throughout the process. Sturluson added an assist for the game-winning goal at SBU (2-1) and contributed as one of a possible four players to produce a corner kick for a Lions' scoring opportunity.
McCord finished tied for second on the team in goals with four, which all came on penalty attempts (4-for-4), while also taking second in points (9) and shots (22) as well.
Liberty registered two goals and provided one assist for five points on 12 shots (five on goal). Both scores were to tie up each match towards the team achieving a 1-1 draw against Rockhurst to begin the season along with a huge score to force No. 8 Central Missouri to settle for a 2-2 draw as part of a total of 907 minutes played (13 matches with two starts).
Belcher exceeded all expectations by leading the Lions in points (13), goals (6), shots (43), shots on goal (24), and game-winners (3), landing in the top-ten in three MIAA categories to wrap up the Louisburg, Kanas product's first year in the green and gold. She recorded her first goal at East Central for the game-winner with 2:30 minutes left and the score tied at 1-1. Then on the road against Lindenwood, she gathered the ball and went on a breakaway down the field for another go-ahead goal at the ten-minute mark of the second period to give the Lions a 1-0 victory.
