(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Missouri Southern Athletic Director Jared Bruggeman has named current Garden City Community College Head Coach Jeff Sims as the 13th head football coach in the program's history.

Sims will be introduced to the media and community at a press conference Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm in the Alumni Room of the North End Zone Facility.

"This is an exciting opportunity to join the Missouri Southern football program and Joplin community," Sims said.

"Leading this program is a dream come true for me. Having grown up in the state of Missouri, gone to school and coached in the area, I have always enjoyed Joplin and believe in what Missouri Southern can become. I would like to thank, Dr. Marble, Jared Bruggeman, and all the Missouri Southern alums who worked hard to make this partnership a reality. Also, my family Dylan, Jake, Sammie, and my wife Lecia who have been supportive as we have chased this dream. I can't wait to get to work this December to help be a part of building the best experience for our football players, setting them up to be service-minded, graduates, and champions."

Sims comes to the Lions with more than 24 years as a high school and collegiate coach. For the past four seasons, Sims has been the head coach at Garden City where he has led the team to a 32-12 record, including the 2016 Junior College National Championship.

This year, Garden City is 10-0 and ranked 2nd in the NJCAA after a win yesterday over Butler Community College. The school will now play in the 2018 National Championship Game against East Mississippi Community College on November 29 at Carnie Smith Stadium in Pittsburg, Kan.

In his career, Sims has coached 49 players to NFL careers, including two first-round NFL Draft picks, (Jason Pierre-Paul and Mike Hughes), well as NFL All-Pro Lavonte Davis. In total, seven players he has coached have been drafted. Two former players, Pierre-Paul and Jacquian Williams, both played for the New York Giants in a Super Bowl victory.

Sims has also been the head coach at Fort Scott Community College where he had a 32-12 record and an appearance in the 2009 National Championship. He got his first head coaching experience at Mesabi Range where he had a 13-7 record, including a 10-1 record in 2003.

In his career as a junior college head coach, Sims is 77-31, led four teams to undefeated regular seasons, and three National Championship appearances. He is the winningest active coach in the Kansas Junior College Conference. His teams have held the No. 1 National Ranking six times in ten years, and was named the 2016 National Coach of the Year, while earning two KJCC Coach of the Year honors. Garden City is the No. 1 ranked team in the current Massey Rankings.

Sims has also served as the Senior director of recruiting at Indiana and Associate Head coach at Florida Atlantic University

"I'd like to thank the search committee for their efforts in this process," said University President Dr. Alan Marble. "One person we can't forget about in this process is Joe Bettasso and his staff. Joe's leadership during this time of transition has been just what this team needed. We cannot thank him enough. I look forward to working with Coach Sims and seeing him lead this team to the championship standards we expect."

Bruggeman echoed Marble's comments.

"I really want to point out the search and screening committee for all the hard work and dedication in finding a head coach that understands and appreciates the Missouri Southern community, and recognizes what a successful program means to our community and the region," Bruggeman said. "We are particularly excited about introducing Jeff (Sims) as our head coach. He has been very successful at every level and we're excited to see his leadership of the next era in our football program."

Sims and his wife Lecia, have three children Dylan (17), Jake (16), Samantha (14). He has an associates degree and bachelors degree from Baker University.

Sims will officially start at Missouri Southern once his commitment at Garden City is complete.
