Emporia, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern defense held Emporia State without a touchdown for nearly the entire first half, but couldn't keep up the pressure and fell 48-0 at Emporia State today.
Southern (1-9, 1-9 MIAA) had a 9-for-20 performance from quarterback Sean Kelly as he threw for 104 yards and rushed for 17. Dalton James rushed for 51 yards, while catching three passes out of the backfield for 27 yards. Erick Dedric Jr. caught two passes for 37 yards, while Cole Dunbar caught a pair of passes for 20 yards.
Riley Hathorn had 10 punts for 406 yards and an average of 40.6 per punt with a long of 55 and four inside the 20-yard line.
Defensively John Ejizu and Korenzo Credit had eight tackles each, while Alan Glanville had a forced fumble and a recovery.
Emporia State (6-4, 6-4 MIAA) had nine different people rush the ball and 11 catch a pass. Quarterback Braxton Marstall was 31-of-42 for 316 yards and four touchdowns.
Neither team scored in the first quarter. The Southern defense started hot as Glanville forced and recovered a fumble on the first Hornet drive. Southern then forced a turnover on downs on the second ESU drive.
ESU picked up a pair of field goals on its first two possessions of the second quarter and scored two quick touchdowns on the final two possessions of the half to go into the locker room up 20-0.
Southern will conclude the season next Saturday as the Lions play host to Pittsburg Stae in the 2018 Miners Bowl. The game will also be Senior Day for the Lions. Kickoff from Fred G. Hughes Stadium at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex is slated for 2 pm.
