Fourth quarter flurry leads Missouri Southern women to first win

The Missouri Southern women's basketball team earned its first victory of the season thanks to a 24-11 advantage in the fourth period to defeat the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies 78-60 inside the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center Tuesday evening.

The Lions (1-2) entered the fourth period up five points which was erased immediately as the Aggies scored a 3-pointer and converted on two free-throws to get even at 54-54 at the 8:22 mark. For the next five minutes, it was all Lions launching towards a 18-2 run for a 16-point lead and the victory.

A pair of juniors in guard Destiny Cozart (17) and Chasidee Owens (16) combined for 33 of the Lions 78 points while Cozart shot 50-percent from the field and Owens grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.



Sophomore guard Kirsta Clark and junior forward Jordan Schoenberger both added 11 points and combined for 12 rebounds. Clark also had two assists and two steals.

OPSU (3-3) kept it close through the entire game, tying Southern four times and eventually taking a three-point lead (49-46) with three minutes left in the third period. Guard Taylor Acosta paced the Aggies with 12 points while teammate Monti Regier recorded 11 in the loss.

The Lions look to continue their winning ways at home when they welcome in the Henderson State Reddies for a noon match-up on Friday as part of Elementary day.
