MSSU volleyball to entertain Newman University

The Missouri Southern volleyball team will welcome in Newman University to Young Gymnasium for an MIAA mid-week matchup Tuesday night at 6 pm.

The Lions (11-10, 4-7 MIAA) went 2-1 last week with wins over Pittsburg State and Fort Hays State, but a setback against No. 3 ranked Nebraska-Kearney. The Lions defeated Newman 3-1 earlier in the year.

Southern is sitting in 8th place in the MIAA standings with the top eight teams earning a bid to the MIAA Championships inside Hy-Vee Arena in Kansas City at the end of the season.








Janelle Brehm averaged 3.40 kills and 3.70 digs per set last week and Brehm currently ranks 13th nationally in total attacks, while leading the MIAA in that category. Brehm ranks second in attacks per set in the MIAA, as well. Morgan Nash is fourth nationally in triple-double's and second in the MIAA.

Alicia Pickett leads the MIAA in total blocks and ranks second in blocks per set, while ranking 37th nationally in total blocks. The Lions lead the MIAA in total blocks, total attacks and digs, while ranking second in assists and blocks per set and third in kills.

Newman (0-20, 0-11 MIAA) is looking for its first win on the season and is in its first season in the MIAA after competing in the Heartland Conference prior to this season. Trinity Conley leads the team with 3.37 kills per set, while Reagen Roth leads the Jets with 7.28 assists per set. Defensively, Mackenzie Anderson has a team-high 3.82 digs per set.

Southern will be back on the road this weekend as the Lions travel to Northwest Missouri on Friday and Central Missouri on Saturday.
