Missouri Southern quarterback Jacob Park set new passing records for yards in a game by an individual and team but the Lions fell to No. 17 Central Missouri 71-42 on Homecoming at Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
Park threw for 519 yards becoming the first Lion quarterback to throw for a half a thousand in a single game. He went 36-of-59 with four touchdowns in the game, helping the Lions (1-4, 1-4 MIAA) set the team record for passing yards in a game with 519, as well. Park also tied the single-game completion record with 36, tying the mark held by TJ Fleeton in 2015 against Fort Hays State.
Brian Boyd Jr. was one of three Lions to have 100-plus yards receiving in the game as he caught eight passes for 116 yards and two scores. Brailon Mouton had 100 yards on eight catches and two touchdowns, while Devond Blair Jr. had seven catches for 160 yards.
Defensively, Colton Winder had a career-high 15 tackles, while John Ejizu had ten of his own. Loren Young had eight tackles with one for a loss and four quarterback hurries, while JaTece Wright had seven stops with a tackle in the backfield. Jamie Tago, Malachi Broadnax and Levi Marlay all had sacks, while David Rose had an interception.
Central Missouri (5-0, 5-0) was led by Brook Bolles who threw for 421 yards and seven touchdowns.
The Lions got on the board first as Southern took the opening kickoff and saw Josh Mercer return it 67 yards. Charles West capped the drive with a 20-yard rushing touchdown to put the Lions up 7-0 early on.
Central tied the score at seven with 2:53 left in the first quarter, but the Lions answered back with a score from Park to Mouton from 19 yards out to give the Lions a 14-7 lead after one quarter.
After a three-and-out from the Lions defense, Southern took possession and marched down the field with Park hitting Boyd from 22 yards out for a score to give the Lions a 21-7 lead early in the second quarter.
Central tied the score at 21 with 7:30 to go in the quarter, but Park completed an 11-play 78-yard drive to put the Lions up 28-21 with 3:09 to go in the quarter as he scampered in from two-yards out. The Mules added a late score to tie it at 28 going into the break.
The Mules, however, started the second half with six scores before back-to-back touchdown passes from Park, the first to Mouton and the second to Boyd. Central added a late score for the final tally.
The Lions had 558 yards of total offense and out-passed Central 519 to 421.
Southern will be back in action next weekend as the Lions will travel to Missouri Western to take on the Griffons. Kickoff from Spratt Stadium is slated for 4 pm.
