MSSU volleyball falls in four sets to Missouri Western

Morgan Nash and Janelle Brehm both posted double-double's, but the Missouri Southern volleyball team fell on the road at Missouri Western, three sets to one. Individual set scores were 19-25, 17-25, 25-22 and 21-25.

Nash led the Lions (8-8, 1-5 MIAA) with 40 assists and ten digs, while Brehm posted totals of 19 kills and 14 digs. Brooklynn McCain had a team-high 23 digs, while Shaylon Sharp nearly had a double-double of her own with 11 kills and nine digs. CC Pollard had nine kills.

Western (9-5, 3-3 MIAA) was led by Maryssa Recio with 15 kills.








Set one saw ten tied scores and six lead changes as the teams traded points up until 13-13, when Western went on a 3-0 run to go up 16-13. The Griffons led 19-16 and held on to win 25-19.

The second set saw seven ties and four lead changes, but a 6-2 run early on for the Griffons proved to be the key. The third set saw the Lions open up a 16-13 lead after an ace from McCain, but the set would be tied at 17. Southern led 20-19 and again 22-2, but three-straight points from the Lions closed out the set.

The fourth set saw Western open up a 13-10 lead midway through, but the Lions stormed back to lead 17-14 after a kill from Brehm capped an 8-1 run for Southern. Western tied the set at 19 and again at 20, before pulling ahead and finishing off the match.

The Lions will be back in action at home next weekend as Southern plays host to Washburn on Friday at 6 pm and Emporia State on Saturday at 1 pm.
