Big fourth quarter lifts Washburn over MSSU 49-19

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Missouri Southern sophomore linebacker Richard Jordan Jr. set a new single-game tackle record Saturday night, but a big fourth quarter lifted Washburn over the Lions 49-19 inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium.

The Lions (1-6, 1-6 MIAA) were led by Jordan's 25 tackles which breaks the previous high of 21 held by Ron Burton. Jordan had 12 solo and 13 assisted tackles, including a tackle for a loss of three yards in the game. Colton Winder had 11 tackles, while Malachi Broadnax, JaTece Wright and David Rose all had interceptions for the Lions. Southern had seven tackles for a loss of 54 yards in the game and six quarterback hurries.

Offensively, Jacob Park went 32-of-67 for 415 yards and a touchdown, breaking his own single-game attempt mark of 66 in the process. Park scored a touchdown on the ground, as well. Brian Boyd Jr. had ten catches for 157 yards, while Benjamin Phillips had eight catches for 94 yards and a score.

Washburn (3-4, 3-4 MIAA) got a pair of touchdowns from Zach Willis, while Mitch Schurig threw for three of his own.

The Ichabods used a pair of special teams touchdowns to go up 14-0 in the first before Schurig hooked up with Marcus Meier to make the score 21-0 after one.

Park and the Lions answered right back and after an interception from Broadnax started the drive, Park completed it with a two-yard dive into the endzone to make the score 21-7 with 7:16 to go in the 2nd quarter.

After Washburn scored with 1:21 on the clock, the Lions pushed the ball back down the field and in 34 seconds, got a touchdown from Park to Phillips to make the halftime score 28-14.

The Lions picked up the only points in the third on a 27-yard field goal from Riley Hathorn and a safety from Boyd after the Lions' special teams unit had forced a fumble in punt coverage. Another field goal attempt from Hathorn was missed at the end of the quarter as Washburn led 28-19 going to the fourth.

The Ichabods, however, scored three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth to put the game away.

The Lions had 30 first downs to Washburn's 25, and the Lions out gained the Ichabods 430-411. Southern forced four turnovers on the night with three interceptions and turning a punt into a safety.

Southern will be back in action next week as the Lions travel to Northeastern State. Kickoff from Doc Wadley Stadium is slated for 2 pm.
