MSSU track and field teams to compete at Gorillas Classic

The nationally-ranked Missouri Southern men's and women's track and field teams head to Pittsburg State on Saturday as the Lions will participate in the David Suenram Gorillas Classic hosted inside Carnie Smith Stadium.

The Lions' women are ranked third nationally, their highest-ever ranking in the program's history, while the men are ranked 12th in the latest coaches' poll.

The event action will start on Saturday morning with the hammer throw at 11 am and additional field events starting at noon. Running events start at 2 pm. On the women's side, the Lions and top-ranked Grand Valley State will be squaring off alongside host Pittsburg State, Northwest Missouri and Central Missouri. On the men's side, fifth-ranked Grand Valley is the top-ranked program participating, as well as No. 11 Pitt State, No. 12 Southern and No. 18 Central Missouri.








The women have nine individual performances currently ranked in the top ten in Division II, including four in the top-two. Elizabeth Pomatto has the top-ranked javelin distance this year, while Desirea Buerge is ranked second in both the shot put and the discus. Emily Presley is ranked second in the pole vault, while Jasmine Deckard is ranked fifth in the 200m and 7th in the 100m. Morgan Smith is ranked 6th in the 100m hurdles, while Payton Roberts is ranked fifth in the shot put.

On the men's side, the Lions have seven top-ten performances so far this year, led by Rajindra Campbell in the shot and discus, where he's ranked third and fifth, respectively. Adrain Broadus is ranked seventh in the triple jump, while Rajheim Carby is seventh in the javelin. Gidieon Kimutai is eighth in the 5k, while Andrew Wells (high jump) and Kennan Harrison (triple jump) are ranked tenth in their events.
