(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Maryville, Mo. -- The 22nd-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team trailed by just five at the half after leading for a good portion of the first half, but 2nd-ranked Northwest Missouri put away the Lions in the second half, winning 82-62 inside Bearcat Arena today.

Southern (17-5, 8-4 MIAA) was led by 22 points from Elyjah Clark as he hit four three-pointers on the night, moving his career total to 260, just five shy of tying the school record held by Austin Wright. Reggie Tharp had 13 points and four assists, while Cam Martin scored 10 points.

Northwest Missouri (21-0, 11-0 MIAA) had three score in double-figures, led by 28 points and ten rebounds from Joey Witthus, while Trevor Hudgins had 24 points.

Southern jumped out to an 8-0 run early on off of three's from Clark and Braelon Walker. The lead was five (10-5) after a jumper from Martin with 16:53 left in the first half. A layup from Tharp gave the Lions a 14-11 lead with 11:23 left, while a layup from Clark with 7:34 left kept the lead at three (21-18).

A dunk from Martin with 6:21 left in the first kept the lead at three (23-20), while a three from Clark gave the Lions a 26-25 lead with 4:27 left. At that point, Northwest went on a 10-5 run to end the half and lead the Lions 35-31 at the break.

A bucket from the Bearcats with 16 minutes left gave Northwest a seven-point lead and layup from Hudgins with 12:51 to go pushed the lead to 12. Northwest led by 17 (60-43) with just under ten to play, but a quick 4-0 run from the Lions cut it to 62-49 with 7:33 left on the clock. That would be as close as the Lions would get.

Southern shot 40 percent from the field in the game, but couldn't overcome the hot shooting of the Bearcats.

The Lions will be back in action on February 7 when Southern plays host to Nebraska-Kearney. Tip off from Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 7:30 pm.
