Late rally lifts Oklahoma Christian over MSSU baseball 11-9

Edmond, Okla. - The Missouri Southern baseball team took a 9-4 lead into the ninth, but the Oklahoma Christian Eagles rallied for seven runs to defeat the Lions 11-9 today in non-conference action.

Southern (1-1) got two hits each from Freddie Landers, Ryan Hunter, Dexter Swims, Denver Coffee and Dan Lenz. Davin Gummere, Hunter and Swims had a home run each with Coffey adding a double. Gummere and Hunter drove in two each, while Coffee and Gummere scored twice each. Landers, Mike Million, Hunter, Swims and Lenz all scored for the Lions.

Zac Shoemaker started and went six innings, allowing just four hits, one earned run and striking out five, while walking just one. River Wright, Bradley Hershy, Logan VanWey, Austin DesRoche and Cam Bednar threw in relief with DesRoche picking up the loss in relief.





OCU got on the board first with a run in the top of the first, but the Lions answered back with four runs in the first. Gummere homered to lead off the inning and Million had an RBI, scoring Landers. Hunter then had a two-run blast.

The Lions got an RBI from Alex Phillips in the second, before OCU scored again in the third to make the score 5-2. Swims homered in the fifth, while Lenz added an RBI single to put the Lions up 7-2 going to the sixth.

OCU scored a run in the seventh to get within four (7-3) but the Lions scored two more in the bottom of the inning on an RBI from Landers and Lenz scoring on a wild pitch.

OCU got a run in the eighth to get within five (9-4) and came alive in the ninth, scoring seven runs to put the game away.

Southern will be back in action tomorrow when the Lions take on Lubbock Christian at 10 am.
