The Missouri Southern baseball team will have its home opener tomorrow as the Lions will play host to Northwestern Oklahoma State at 1 pm on Warren Turner Field.
The day will consist of two games with game one being a 9-inning game and game two being seven innings. The two teams will play the final game on Sunday with one, nine-inning affair.
Southern comes into the series 2-1 overall with a dramatic ninth-inning rally to come-from-behind to defeat No. 40 ranked Lubbock Christian this past Sunday. The Lions are hitting .306 as a team, led by this week's MIAA Hitter of the Week Freddie Landers who is hitting .545 with two RBIs and five runs scored.
Dexter Swims is hitting .444, while Dan Lenz (.364), Ryan Hunter (.333) and Denver Coffee (.308) are all hitting above .300. Davin Gummere leads the team with two home runs, while Lenz is the team leader with four RBIs.
Brennon Covington looked sharp in relief as he struck out eight in 3.1 innings to get the win in the season-opener against Southwestern Oklahoma. Zac Shoemaker went six innings and allowed just four hits in a no-decision, while Will Bausinger picked up a win in relief, throwing 4.2 innings and striking out five. On the early season, the Lions have 37 strikeouts from the pitching staff.
NWOSU comes into the game 4-0 on the season with a three-game sweep of Christian Brothers and a win this week over Fort Hays State. The Rangers are hitting .398 as a team with a team ERA of 2.53 and have out scored its opponents 41-9.
