Maryville, Mo. - With five seconds remaining in regulation, senior guard Chelsey Henry let the ball fly for the game-winning 3-pointer for the Missouri Southern women's basketball team in a 61-58 victory over the Northwest Bearcats inside Bearcat Arena Saturday afternoon.
Henry led the Lions (12-10, 4-8 MIAA) with a game-high 24 points on 8-for-16 shooting (50%) from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. Junior forward Chasidee Owens added 11 points while sophomore Krista Clark poured in ten towards the win.
Both teams were held scoreless until half way through the first quarter when the Lions and Bearcats traded baskets toward a 2-2 tie entering the first media timeout. Northwest when a on a 6-0 run out of the break, but the Lions came back after Krista Clark retrieved her own rebound and went back up for the layup off a miss free throw to get the Lions to cut the deficit to four to close the first quarter.
Missouri Southern battled back to force a 26-26 tie with seconds to go in the second quarter of play. Then, Clark gathered the rebound on missed opportunity by Northwest, dribbled a couple moments, and let it fly banking it off the backboard to give the Lions a three-point lead at halftime while holding the Bearcats to a combined 8-for-33 from the field in the first half.
NWMSU (7-13, 3-8 MIAA) jumped out in the second half to a seven-point advantage (36-29), but the Lions responded down the stretch by taking the lead and eventually find themselves down one heading into the final quarter of play.
The Lions return home for a two-game series including Nebraska-Kearney (2/7) at 5:30 pm and nationally ranked Fort Hays State (2/9) at 1:30 pm.
