Edmond, Okla. -- The Missouri Southern baseball team got three RBIs from Dan Lenz and three runs scored from Ryan Hunter, while Brennon Covington threw three and a third of scoreless ball and the Lions took out Southwestern Oklahoma 7-5 today in their season opener.
Southern (1-0) got a strong appearance from Covington out of the bullpen as he struck out eight in three and a third, allowing just four hits for the win. Austin DesRoche threw an inning of relief, striking out two, while Cam Bednar threw a perfect ninth, striking out a batter for the save.
Offensively, the Lions were led by Lenz who went 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Hunter was 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored and a double. Freddie Landers, Alex Phillips and Mike Million had two hits each, while Troy Gagan drove in a run and scored another. Landers and Denver Coffee scored, as well.
Southern got the scoring started in the second when Gagan and Hunter scored on a two-RBI single from Lenz. Southwestern tied it up with two of their own in the second, before Million singled home Landers in the third to start a four-run inning for the Lions. Hunter doubled home Million, and Gagan drove in Coffee before Hunter scored on an error.
Southwestern scored three runs in the fourth to get within a run, before Lenz drove in Hunter in the fifth.
The Lions will be back in action again tomorrow as Southern will take on Oklahoma Christian. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
