MSSU men fall to Fort Hays State 89-84

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Hays, Kan. - A running layup from Fort Hays State put the Tigers up 85-84 with 20 seconds to go and proved to be the game-winner as the 23rd-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team fell 89-84 tonight inside Gross Memorial Coliseum.

Southern (22-6, 13-5 MIAA) was led offensively from Cam Martin as he scored 29 points and added eight rebounds, going 9-of-14 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free throw line. Braelon Walker scored 17 and went 5-of-9 from long-range, while Kinzer Lambert scored 16 and had a team-high seven assists.

FHSU (17-10, 11-7 MIAA) was led by Brady Werth with 19 as four Tigers scored in double-figures.

Both teams went back-and-forth in the early part of the first half, until the Lions went on a 10-0 run and went up 25-17 with 11 minutes left on the clock after a layup from Martin. A 3-pointer from Lambert put the Lions up 30-22 with 7:43 to go in the first half, anda three from Reggie Tharp put the Lions' lead back to ten (35-25).

A layup from Martin put the Lions up 12 (37-25) and a layup from Tharp with 1:46 to go gave the Lions a 39-31 lead. A tip-in for the Tigers as the halftime buzzer sounded gave the Lions a 41-37 lead at the break.

FHSU started the second half on an 8-2 run, giving the Tigers a 45-43 lead with 16:33 left on the clock. Hays maintained a slim lead for the next ten minutes, leading by as many as five (65-60) after a jumper from Werth.

Southern went ahead on a pair of Walker freebies with 7:27 to go and a layup from Clark with 4:57 on the clock kept the Lions up 75-73. The two teams then traded leads and buckets until the Tigers went up 85-84 after a layup from Trey O'Neil with 20 seconds left.

The Lions had the ball late, but a steal from the Tigers gave FHSU the ball back with seven seconds on the clock and Southern was forced to foul. The Tigers made their free throws to secure the win.

The Lions shot 48 percent from the field and 46 percent from the three-point line.

The Lions will finish off the regular season this Saturday as Southern travels to Nebraska-Kearney. Tip off is slated for 4 pm.

MSSU women fall to Fort Hays State 79-59

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern women's basketball team went head-to-head with the Fort Hays State Tigers, falling 79-59 inside the Grossman Coliseum Thursday evening.

Senior Chelsey Henry recorded the first four points for the Lions (13-15, 5-13 MIAA) as she went on to finish the night with a team-high 12, on 5-of-11 shooting from the field.

Freshman Layne Skiles tied a career-high in points after scoring ten off the bench on a 3-for-5 spurt, including a 2-for-3 line from three-point range. Both Destiny Cozart and Chasidee Owens added nine points as well. MSSU's bench outscored the Tigers 32-19 which Skiles and Cozart were key parts toward in holding that advantage.

The Lions cut the deficit to 14 in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Skiles, but that was as close as they would get until the clock read zero. Fort Hays State (27-1, 17-1 MIAA) ended up with four players in double-figures in the win.

MSSU closes out the 2018-19 regular season against Nebraska-Kearney on Saturday at 2:00 pm. A win over the Lopers and a loss by Southwest Baptist to Lindenwood would secure Southern the tenth and final spot into the MIAA tournament taking place in Kansas City.

St. Louis Cardinals sign Miles Mikolas to four-year extension

(From the St. Louis Cardinals)

The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed All-Star pitcher Miles Mikolas to a four-year (2020-23) contract extension. Financial terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are extremely pleased to have Miles under contract for the foreseeable future," stated Cardinals' Chairman Bill DeWitt, Jr. "Miles made great contributions to our team as an All-Star last season, and he quickly fit in with his teammates and our fans. We look forward to having Miles serve as a key member of our pitching staff for the next five years."

Mikolas, 30, was recently tabbed as the Cardinals 2019 Opening Day starter. The Jupiter, Fla. native went 18-4 in his initial season with the Redbirds in 2018, co-leading the National League in wins while also posting the league's top winning pct. (.818). His perfect 10-0 mark in road games matched the best in Major League history for a pitcher with 10 or more road wins, joining Hall of Famer Greg Maddux (1995) and Jimmy Key (1994).

"Miles proved that his recent years in Japan were consistent with the projections we had for him upon his return to the Majors, and he took those to an even higher level with an All-Star season in 2018," said Cardinals' President of Baseball Operations John Mozeliak. "This was an opportunity for Miles to train in his backyard here in Jupiter as well as pitch in front of family in St. Louis. We are excited for him to be a part of the Cardinals for four additional years."

After spending the 2015-17 seasons pitching for Yomiuri in the Japanese Central League, Mikolas signed a free-agent contract with the Cardinals in December of 2017, returning to the majors for the first time since 2014 when he made 10 starts for Texas. Mikolas was a combined 31-13 in Japan with a 2.25 ERA in 62 starts for the Yomiuri Giants.

In addition to his top N.L. marks in wins and winning pct. in 2018, Mikolas was also ranked among the Senior Circuit's top performers in ERA (2.83-4th), innings pitched (200.2-6th) and starts (32-9th), and he paced the league in fewest walks/9 IP ratio (1.30), issuing just 29 free passes.

Mikolas was voted by his teammates as the recipient of the 2018 Darryl Kile Award, presented annually by the St. Louis Chapter of the BBWAA to the Cardinals player who best demonstrates the qualities of the late Darryl Kile by being a good teammate, a great friend, a fine father and a humble man.

Walker scores 25 as MSSU men down Emporia State 91-82

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Emporia, Kan. -- The 23rd-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team secured a top-four seed in the MIAA Tournament and Braelon Walker tied a career-high with 25 points as the Lions defeated the Hornets 91-82 today inside White Auditorium.

Southern (22-5, 13-4 MIAA) has secured one of the top four seeds in the 2019 MIAA Basketball Tournament in Kansas City, meaning the Lions won't play until the quarterfinals on either Thursday or Friday.

Braelon Walker tied his career high with 25 points (ironically, he had set it previously the last time the Lions played Emporia State). Walker had 21 points at the half on 7-of-11 from the three-point line. He hit seven three-pointers and added three assists and one steal in the game. Cam Martin scored 21 points and added 14 rebounds, going 7-for-11 from the field and 7-for-8 from the free throw line. It is the 16th double-double of the season for Martin. Kinzer Lambert had 13 points and five rebounds, while Elyjah Clark scored 12, pulled down six boards and dished out six assists, while going 3-for-8 from long-range.

ESU (11-15, 6-11 MIAA) had three score in double-figures, led by 17 points from Hassan Thomas and 16 from Kooper Glick.

Walker hit a three for the first points of the game with 18:28 left in the first half, but both teams traded points, before the Lions went on a 5-0 run to lead 15-8 with 12:21 left. Back-to-back 3's from Walker put the Lions up 29-16 with 6:47 on the clock and the lead reached 14 (36-22) after a layup from Martin with four minutes on the clock. Another three from Walker put the Lions up 15 (42-27), and Southern would go into the locker room up 45-32 at the half.

Southern led by 21 (57-36) after a three from Lambert with 15:42 left in the second half and led by 20 (71-51) after a three from Jennings with just under 11 minutes to play. Emporia, however, answered and chipped away at the lead, eventually cutting the Lions' advantage to just six (77-71) after a three from Hassan Thomas with 4:40 on the clock.

The Lions got back up by 11 after a three from Lambert with 2:21 left and Southern made its free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Southern shot 54 percent from the field, 44 percent from the three-point line and 72 percent from the free throw line. Southern had 24 assists on 32 made baskets and outscored ESU 34-24 in the paint.

The Lions will be back in action on Thursday night as Southern travels to Fort Hays State. Tip off from Fort Hays State is slated for 7:30 pm from Gross Memorial Coliseum.

MSSU to co-host state qualifying archery tournament

(From Southern News Service)

For the third year, the Kinesiology Department at Missouri Southern State University will co-host the Missouri National Archery in the Schools Program’s (MoNASP) State Qualifying Tournament.

The Academy Sports + Outdoors Shootout is set for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, March 2, in the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center. Between 700-800 fourth- through 12th-grade students are expected to compete in the 11th annual MoNASP event, which is open to participants in the Four State Area.

Archery has become the fastest growing sport in Missouri, and some of the best programs at the national level can be found in Southwest Missouri.

In 2017, five teams from Missouri were ranked in the top 10 – including Sarcoxie, Carl Junction and Carthage. Sarcoxie Middle School was named National Team Champions that year.

In 2018, Carl Junction High School was named 2018 State 3D Champions, while Sarcoxie student Ally Nordell was the 2018 National Tournament Female Champion. Carthage sophomore Trenton Meyer shot a perfect 300 in the bullseye competition – a rare feat, and a first in Missouri.

New this year will be a special recognition for the Academic Archers, the more than 200 participating archers who have maintained a high grade point average.

Trophies, medals, gift cards and other prizes will be awarded. Flights will start at 9 a.m., with new flights starting every hour. Awards will be announced at approximately 5 p.m.

Cost for spectators is $3 at the door; children 12 and under are free.
