MSSU women lose to Central Missouri 61-48

The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team (14-6, 8-5 MIAA) couldn't overcome a cold shooting first half and fell to Central Missouri (14-8, 8-6 MIAA) 61-48 on Saturday afternoon in Warrensburg.
Southern struck first with just over a minute into the game as Nic Hartzog drove for a layup to give the Lions their only lead of the game at 2-0. Central Missouri would use a 7-0 run to take a 7-2 lead and never look back as they pushed their lead up to 12 at 19-7 with 8:36 left to play in the half. The Lions would go on a 8-0 run to cut the lead to four, 19-15, with 6:30 left in the half before UCM would answer with a 6-0 run to take a 10 point lead, 25-15, into the locker room.
For the half Southern shot 17.9 percent, 5-of-28, from the field and 0-5 from three point range. UCM out rebounded the Lions in the first stanza 23-20 while both teams made five three throws each.
The Lions came out of the locker room hot as they put together a 13-4 run to pull within one at 29-28 with just under 15 minutes to play. Central Missouri pushed their lead to 18 as the Lions went a seven minute stretch without scoring before Hartzog would end the 18-0 run with a free throw at the 6:05 mark.
Southern tried to claw their way back into the game as the methodically cut the UCM lead down to nine at 57-48 with 53 seconds left to play. That six minute span saw the Lions go on a 18-6 run that saw Hartzog score three,Lex Fitzpatrick added two points and one assist, Jordan Dinyer with two points and four rebounds, Sharese Jones added five points, and Shawnee Phillips with six.
The Jennies hit just two of their four free throws in the closing seconds and scored on a layup following a defensive rebound as time expired for the 61-48 win.
The Lions were led by Jones and Hartzog who both scored 10 points. Camila Lacerda added eight and Phillips scored six. Jones narrowly missed her seventh double-double of the season as she came away with a team high nine rebounds, with Dinyer pulling down seven.
The Lions are back in action on February 11 as they travel to Northwest Missouri for a 5:30 pm tilt.
