Missouri Southern Softball dropped their final two games, 9-5 to Quincy and 6-5 to Rockhurst, Saturday morning in the UAM 8 State Classic in Bentonville.
Game One
Quincy struck first plating three runs in the top half of the first before the Lions would get one back in the bottom of the frame as Alana Hester led off with a double and stole third and came in on a single by Myranda Stewart.
Quincy would add one in the second and four in the third to take an 8-1 lead. Southern would get three runs back in the home half of the fifth as once again Hester led off the inning with a hit, this time a single, and another stolen base. Quincy loaded the bases with back-to-back walks of Brooke Swadley and Stewart.Kathryn Goins-Osburn then drew a bases loaded walk to bring in Hester and a single by Michala Wood would bring in both Swadley and Stewart to cut the Quincy lead to 8-4.
The Hawks add one run in the top of the seventh to make it 9-4 as Southern would come up in the bottom half of the inning. Swadley started the home half off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out by Stewart. Goins-Osburn would strike for a double to score Swadley to provide the final score of 9-5.
For the game Hester went 2-4 with two runs scored and Goins-Osburn went 2-3 with two RBI and a walk.
Kali' Hodson got the start inside the circle and suffered the loss allowing three runs, all earned, on four hits in the first inning. Ashley Lutz pitched two and a third innings in relief allowing three Quincy runs, two earned, on two hits with two strikeouts. Shelby Mitchell finished the final four and two thirds innings with three runs, all earned, on 11 hits.
Game Two
The second game of the day had Rockhurst winning on a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh to take a 6-5 win over the Lions.
Rockhurst got the scoring started in the first frame as the Hawks plated one run. The Lions would get that run back in the top of the third as Jessica Killer led off the third with a double and scored on the double by Abi Corbett. Rockhurst would take the lead again in the bottom half of the third as they got a run back and added three runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
Southern would claw back in the next three innings scoring one in the fifth as Hester singled in Sarah Williams, who reached on a fielding error by the RU third baseman. The Lions added one more in the sixth as Killer singled in Wood, who reached on a walk. Southern tied the game in the top half of the seventh as Rockhurst would walk the bases loaded before Wood would single in both Swadley and Stewart to make it 5-5.
Rockhurst led off the home half of the seventh as Kelsey Tepen drew a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Gabbie Boerema. Tepen scored on the ensuing double by Lauren Cairo for the 6-5 win.
Wiliams got the start for Southern and went three and a third innings allowing five runs, two earned, on four hits. Lutz pitched three innings in relief and suffered the loss while giving up one run, earned, on two hits with two strikeouts.
Killer led the way offensively for Southern in game two as she went 2-2 from the dish with one RBI and one run scored. Wood finished 2-3 with two RBI, a walk, and one run scored.
