The Missouri Southern men's basketball team trailed by 18 at the half and couldn't overcome the early hole and the Lions fell 74-61 Wednesday night on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (15-10, 9-7 MIAA) was led offensively by Taevaunn Prince as he scored 19 and pulled down six rebounds, going 8-10 from the field and 3-5 from the free throw line. Lane Barlow scored 13, while Charlie Brown scored ten.
SBU (11-14, 6-10 MIAA) had three score in double-figures led by 17 from Daymond Cowlah.
The game was tied at seven at the first media timeout with Prince scoring four and Brown adding a three. The game, however, took a turn as SBU went on a 14-4 run and led 21-11 with 9:34 to go in the half. A layup from Barlow stopped the run and got the Lions to within eight (21-13) with just over nine to go.
A free throw from Prince with 8:15 to go in the half got the Lions to within six (23-17), but that would be as close as they would get. SBU led 44-26 at the break.
Southern got to within 12 on multiple occasions in the second half, but the Bearcats opened up a 22-point lead (72-50) after a three with just under four to go. The Lions got it back to 12 after a layup from Randy Clark with 20 seconds left, but a free throw from the Bearcats' Daniel Ogunyemi provided the final score.
The Lions shot 47 percent from the field, but hit just 24 percent from the three-point line and 56 percent from the free throw line.
The Lions will be back in action this Saturday when Southern travels to Pittsburg State for a State Farm Trophy Series matchup with the Gorillas. Tip off from John Lance Arena is slated for 3:30 pm.
