Late run lifts MSSU women to 71-65 win over Central Missouri

A 26-4 run to end the game by the Missouri Southern women's basketball team helped lift the Lions over visiting Central Missouri 71-65 today on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (14-5, 8-4 MIAA) was led offensively by Sharese Jones, pictured, with her seventh double-double of the season, scoring 15 and pulling down 15 boards. Nic Hartzog scored 13, while Tami Morice scored ten on 3-5 from the field and 2-4 from long range.

UCM (12-8, 6-6 MIAA) had three score in dobule-figures led by 20 points from Shelby Winklemann. Jasmine Thompson had 16 points and ten rebounds.

Camila Lacerda hit a three pointer on the Lions' first possession to put Southern up 3-0 and the Lions led 6-2 after a free throw from Jones with 16:34 left to go in the half. A pair of free throws from the Jennies gave Central a 10-8 lead with 12:29 left in the half and a layup from Jones tied the score for the fourth time of the half with 8:51 to go.

A pair of free throws for the Jennies put Central up 24-19 with 6:!3 to go, but a pair of free throws for Jordan Dinyer cut the Central lead to one (24-23) with 1:35 to go in the half. The Jennies, however, went on a 6-1 run to end the half and led 30-24 at the break.

Jones led the Lions with seven points and five boards at the break. She chipped in with two assists and went 3-6 from the field.

A pair of free throws for Jensen Maydew tied the score at 42 with 12:21 in the second half, and after a 4-0 run by the Jennies, a three-point play from Fitzpatrick made the score 46-45 with just over 11 to play.

Central went on an 11-0 run, before a baseline jumper from Dinyer with just over 8:00 to play made the score 59-49. A three from Jolee Sharp cut the Jennies' lead to six (59-53) with 6:28 left and ran the Lions' run to 6-0. A bucket from Dinyer made the score 59-55 with just under six to go, and a pair of free throws from Morice pushed the run to 10-0 and the score was 59-57 with just over five to play.

A three from Morice with 4:30 to go tied the game at 60 and a jumper from Fitzpatrick a minute later gave the Lions a 62-60 lead. After a three from the Jennies gave Central the lead briefly, Jones hit a layup to push Southern back on top 64-63 and a three from Morice made the score 67-63, Southern, forcing a Central timeout.

A pair of free throws from Fitzpatrick with 21.3 left gave the Lions a 69-65 lead, and a block from Dinyer on the ensuing UCM shot gave the Lions possession. Jones hit two free throws to seal the win.

The Lions shot 41 percent in the game, but hit 50 percent of their shots in the second half. They shot 87 percent from the free throw line and scored 16 points on 14 Central turnovers. The Lions held a 10-4 advantage on fast-break points and the Southern bench out scored Central 26-11.

The Lions will take a week off but will be back in action on Feb. 7 as Southern travels to Warrensburg to take on the Jennies. Tip off from the Multipurpose Building is slated for 1:30 pm.
