Late comeback falls short as MSSU men lose 89-79

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

A late comeback from the Missouri Southern wasn't enough and the Lions fell 89-79 today to Central Missouri on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (14-7, 8-4 MIAA) was led in scoring by Taevaunn Prince as he scored 20 and added nine rebounds.Lane Barlow had 18 points, five rebounds and four assists, while both Cameron Cornelius and Greg Renfroescored 11 each.

Central (17-4, 8-4 MIAA) had five score in double-figures led by 22 from Rakeem Dickerson.

Southern scored the first points of the game on a free throw from Renfroe, and led 3-2 after a jumper from Prince with 19:01, but the Mules took the lead and held it until a pair of free throws from Blaine Miller with 11:17 left in the half gave the Lions a 23-22 lead.

A three from the Mules gave Central a 14 point lead (47-33) with 1:33 left and a three from Barlow with 21 seconds left made the score 47-38 going into the locker room.

A jumper from Cornelius with 18:13 left made the score 47-42 and got the Lions within five, but Central opened up a 12-point lead at the 15 minute mark of the second half. The Lions cut the lead to nine after a Barlow free throw at 14:38, but Southern wouldn't get any closer until under four minutes left when five-straight points from Charlie Brown made the score 77-71.

Central pushed its lead back to ten, however, and led 87-77 with under a minute to go and would make late free throws to secure the win.

The Lions shot 44 percent from the field, but 19-29 from the free throw line did in the team. Southern had a 14-9 advantage on the offensive boards and had 18 second-chance points.

Southern will be back in action after a week off when the Lions travel to Warrensburg to take on Central Missouri. Tip off from the Multipurpose Building is slated for 3:30 pm.
