Late shot lifts Central Missouri to 71-69 win over MSSU men

The Missouri Southern men's basketball program tied the game with nine seconds to go, but a shot from Central Missouri with five left gave the Mules the 71-69 win over the Lions inside the Multipurpose Building today. 
Southern (14-8, 8-5 MIAA) led 34-30 at the half and led again by seven (55-48) with just under nine to go in the second half, but couldn't hold on to the lead. 
The Lions were led offensively by Taevaunn Prince as he scored 17 and pulled down five rebounds. Cameron Cornelius scored 14, while Lane Barlow added ten points. 
Central (19-4, 10-4 MIAA) had three score in double-figures led by 19 points from TJ White. 
The Mules opened up a five point (20-15) lead at the midway point of the first half, but Southern went on a 14-5 run to go pu by four (29-25) after a three from Austin Wright with 6:04 left in the half. 
The Lions led by five (31-26) after a layup from Cornelius the next trip down, and a three from Prince gave the Lions a seven-point lead (34-27) with 3:57 to go in the half. The Lions took a 34-30 lead into the break. 
Central opened up the second half on a 10-1 run and led 40-35 with 17:11 to go in the game. A three from Blaine Miller got the Lions within one (47-46) with 14:16 to go and a pair of free throws from Charlie Brown tied the game at 48 with 13:24 left. 
The Lions led by seven (55-48) after a freebie from Miller with 9:34 left and led by six (58-52) with 7:16 to go in the game, but the Mules went on a 9-0 run to go up by three (61-58) with 4:17 left. The game was tied at 67 with 48 seconds left after a free throw from Randy Clark, but a pair of free throws from the Mules' Brennen Hughes put UCM up 69-67. 
Clark hit a jumper with nine seconds left the next trip down to tie the game for the sixth time, but Rakeem Dickerson hit a jumper with five to go to give the Mules the win. 
The Lions shot 45 percent in the game, and 55 percent in the first half, but couldn't stop the Mules in the second half as Central shot 61 percent in the half. 
The Lions will be back in action on Wednesday as Southern travels to Maryville to take on Northwest Missouri. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm.
