Pitt State downs MSSU in Miners Bowl 41-10

The Missouri Southern football team scored first, but Pittsburg State scored 41 unanswered before a late Lions' touchdown, defeating the Lions 41-10 tonight in front of a near capacity crowd at Fred G. Hughes Stadium in the State Farm Miners Bowl.

The Lions (4-5, 4-5 MIAA) threw for 211 yards on the evening, just the second time in the past three seasons, but Southern only rushed for 81 yards, the first time a Lions team has rushed for under 100 since November of 2010 (54 yards vs. Washburn).

PSU (8-1, 8-1 MIAA) out gained the Lions 438-292 and quarterback Anthony Abenoja went 16-25 for 267 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to Gavin Lutman.

Southern took the opening drive and went near the length of the field, but the Lions had to settle for a 29-yard field goal from Brock Renken.

PSU took over, scoring two first-half touchdowns and adding a pair of field goals from Connor Frazell to lead 20-3 at the half.

The Gorillas picked up the second rushing score of the day from quarterback Ramsey Hamilton to start the third, and Abenoja hit Marquise Cushon for a 39-yard score for the final PSU tally.

The Lions added a 56-yard passing touchdown from Scott Lathrop (pictured) to Anthony Cannon to make the final score 41-10.

Lathrop went 10-17 on the evening for 211 yards and one touchdown. Giresse Forchu rushed for 45 yards on 12 carries. Cannon caught six passes for 160 yards and a touchdown.

Johnquavious McBride led the defensive effort with nine tackles, a half a sack and an interception. Justin Tomlinson had nine stops of his own and a pass break up, while Gaige Washington had six tackles and two pass break ups. Vice Epenesa, Molik Slade and Laynce Sanders all had a half a sack, while Breon Matlockhad an interception.

Southern will be back at it next weekend when the Lions travel to Hays, Kan. to take on Fort Hays State. Kickoff from Lewis Field Stadium is slated for 2 pm.
