MSSU women drub Avila 77-51

The Missouri Southern Women's Basketball team used an 18-3 run in the first half to down the visiting Avila Eagles 77-51 Wednesday night inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (3-0) had four score in double-figures led by 13 points from Sharese Jones on 6-9 from the field. She added four rebounds. Jolee Sharp (pictured) went 4-5 from long range and scored 12 points, while Shawnee Phillips had 11 and Nicole Hartzog scored ten.

Avila (3-0) was led in scoring by 23 points from Rebekah Capeder.

Both teams traded runs and baskets early on with a three from Avila's Michaela Brinkley tying the game at 12 with 11:43 to go in the half. The Lions kicked it into high gear at that point, going on an 18-3 run capped off by a three from Phillips with 4:49 to go that made the score 30-15.

The Lions closed the half on an 11-6 run and led 41-21 going into the locker room.

Six quick points to start the half; buckets from Jordan Dinyer, Jones and Hartzog, gave the Lions a 47-20 lead just two minutes into the half. A three pointer from Sharp pushed the Southern lead to 55-29 with just under 14 minutes to go. Another three from Sharp (her third at that point) made the score 58-33 with 10:30 to go.

At the final media timeout, the Lions had a 67-45 lead. A layup from Jenson Maydew with just under two to go made the Lions' lead 74-49.

The Lions shot 46 percent from the field and 44 percent from long-range, while making 82 percent of their free-throws. The Lions scored 36 points off of 26 Avila turnovers, while they held a 40-16 advantage in the paint. The Southern bench outscored Avila 37-5.

Southern will be back in action on Saturday, November 22 when the Lions will play host to Quincy at 1 pm inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
