The Missouri Southern Lions (4-0) used a double-digit scoring effort from a trio of Lions to defeat visiting Quincy (2-1) Saturday afternoon inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center on Robert Corn Court.
The first half went back and forth as the Lions and Quincy traded buckets until a layup from Sharese Jones at the 7:02 mark to give Southern a 16-15 lead. The Lions would expand on that lead to 25-17 at teh 2:34 mark on a three pointer from Jordan Dinyer and take a 25-21 lead into the locker room.
The second half started out with a 10-2 run by Quincy before the Lions started to chip away with a pair of free throws from Nic Hartzog and a fast break layup from Hartzog gave Southern a 31-30 lead with 14:15 to play. The Hawks would answer with a jumper from Nikia Edom to take their last lead at 32-31 with 11:21 to play. The Lions would go on a 6-0 run to take the lead for good as Dinyer connected on a jumper in the paint, Jones completed a three point play, and Hartzog added a pair of free throws. Southern would push the lead to nine, 55-46, on a free throw by Shawnee Phillips with just under 1:30 to play. Quincy would answer with a three pointer from Carly Bettencourt before a foul on teammate Maggie Cunningham would send Hartzog to the line with 44 seconds remaining and seal the 56-49 win for the Lions.
For the game Southern shot 33.3 percent from the field (20-of-60) and 35.7 percent from long range (5-of-14) while holding Quincy to just 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from downtown. The Hawks came into the matchup shooting 47.2 percent from three point range (17-of-36) on the season.
Hartzog finished with 17 points, Jones with 14, and Phillips added 10. Jones added her second double-double of the season with 10 rebounds while Hartzog pulled down seven.
Up next for the Lions is a Tuesday night matchup with Central Christian College at Robert Corn Court inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center, and game time is scheduled for 5:30 pm.
