MSSU volleyball takes out Pitt State in four

The Missouri Southern volleyball team took out visiting Pittsburg State tonight three sets to one to take home the State Farm Trophy Series point in the series. Individual set scores were 25-16, 25-18, 15-25 and 25-23.

Southern (8-21, 5-16 MIAA) was led offensively by Katie Politte as the senior had 16 kills and 12 digs. Krishna Merriman had 15 kills and nine digs, while Abby Finder dished out 44 assists and recorded eight digs. Katie Wiele had a match-high 16 digs.

Pittsburg State (10-19, 7-14 MIAA) was led by 11 kills from Madie Mosier.

The Lions won the first two sets convincingly, leading from start to finish in the first set after opening up an 8-2 lead. They took the second set with just one tie and no lead changes.

Pitt controlled the third set, hitting .500 as a team in the frame.

Set four was back and fourth. The Lions led 11-8 early on and again 16-13 midway through the set after a kill from Merriman. Pitt tied the set at 16 and took an 18-16 lead two points later. The Lions, however, used five-straight points, the last a kill from Whetstone to go up 21-18. The Gorillas tied the set again at 23, but two straight points from the Lions gave Southern the match.

The Lions will finish up the season on Saturday as Southern plays host to Southwest Baptist at 5 pm inside Young Gymnasium. The match will be senior day for the Lions' lone senior, Politte.
