Jones double-double leads MSSU to win in opener

The Missouri Southern Lions (1-0, 0-0 MIAA) behind a double-double from Sharese Jones (pictured) defeated Oklahoma Panhandle (0-1, 0-0 Heartland) 83-47 Friday night at The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Jones scored 19 points while pulling down 14 rebounds to lead all players while Jordan Dinyer added 11 points and six boards.

Southern took the early lead as they scored first on a layup from Dinyer as OPSU answered back with a layup from Brittany Alavinejad. The Lions regained the lead for good at 4-2 on a pair of free throws by Jones at the 18:06 mark. Southern would push the lead up to 15 at 19-4 on a layup by Kenya Brown at the 13:17 mark in the first half. The Lions would have the lead to 18 three times before Oklahoma Panhandle would make a 10-4 run to close out the first half as Southern took a 42-30 lead into the locker room.

The second half would see more Lions offense as Southern pushed the lead to 20 after a pair of free throws byNic Hartzog following a technical foul on the OPSU bench. The lead would reach 25, 63-38, at the 6:27 mark on a layup from Tami Morice. Lex Fitzpatrick would connect on two free throws to expand the lead to 30 at 71-41 with just over four minutes remaining. A three pointer from Anna Hignight, a pair of buckets from Kayla Kivinski, and three free throws from Brown would provide the final margin of 36.

OPSU was led by Tatyana Bell with 13 points and 10 rebounds and Hannah Tatum with 12 points.

The Lions will face off with Rockhurst (1-0, 0-0 GLVC) Saturday evening as they honor the winningest coach in MSSU Women's Basketball history, Maryann Mitts.
