Shawnee Phillips' double-double leads MSSU to 87-51 win

Senior Shawnee Phillips (pictured) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds as the Lions downed Livin' The Dream 87-51 Friday night inside Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Joining Phillips in scoring double figures were senior Nic Hartzog, junior Sharese Jones, and freshman Jordan Dinyer all had 11 points. Junior transfer Verjell Bowleg was second on the team in rebounding pulling down five boards.

Junior Kenya Brown and senior Camila Lacerda had five and four assists respectively while four Lions recorded two steals each.

Southern started the game on a three pointer by Jones before Livin The Dream would score eight unanswered for their largest lead of the night, 8-3, at the 16:43 mark. The Lions would answer with a 9-2 run that included three points each from Dinyer and junior Tami Morice. Southern never looked back as they turned that lead into a 37-26 half time lead.

LTD would get the score withing seven twice in the second half as former Lion Shonte Clay connected on a jumper a the 16:07 mark and Carlai Moore hit a jumper in the paint again at the 15:14 mark. A layup by Dinyer and two free throws by Hartzog would push the lead back to 11 as the Lions went on to the 87-51 rout.

Jade Tinner, from UMKC, led the way for LTD with 13 points while former Lions Clay added nine, Erin Rice eight, Sam Soyez five, and Afton Baldwin two.

Southern will open their regular season next weekend as the host the Fairfield Inn/Pizza Hut Classic. The Lions play Oklahoma Panhandle on Friday night at 7pm and pay tribute to the winningest women's basketball coach, Maryann Mitts, on Saturday during their tilt with Rockhurst at 7pm.
