MSSU volleyball ends season with loss to Southwest Baptist

The Missouri Southern volleyball team fell three sets to none tonight at home to Southwest Baptist on Senior Day inside Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 19-25, 24-26, and 23-25.

Southern (8-22, 5-17 MIAA) was led by Katie Politte as the senior had 12 kills and seven digs, while hitting .303 in the match. Callie Whetstone had eight kills and four blocks, to go with a .375 attack average, while Monica White had eight kills and hit .312. Abby Finder had 31 assists and eight digs, while Katie Wiele had eight digs of her own.

SBU (10-20, 5-17 MIAA) had two score in double-figures for kills led by 13 from Taryn Marton as she added a match-high 12 digs, as well.

In a back-and-forth match, set one saw five tied scores and three lead changes, while set two saw 14 ties and two lead changes. The final set saw eight ties and four lead changes.

The Lions finish the season 8-22 in John Napier's first season, doubling the win total from a season ago. Politte finishes her career with 1,160 kills which ranks 8th all-time in MSSU history. Her 4,013 total attacks ranks third best and she is just one of three individuals to ever record more than 4,000 attacks in a career. Her 1,317 attacks this season ranks third-best in a single season at MSSU.

Callie Whetstone finishes the season with 150 block assists, breaking the MSSU single season record which had stood at 115. Her 171 total blocks this year ranks third best and she currently leads all of Division II in both blocks per set and total blocks. Her 298 career total blocks rank 8th in MSSU history, while her 256 block assists rank third-best.

The Lions' 451 block assists on the season also sets a new team single-season record, besting the previous mark of 357.
