The Missouri Southern volleyball team picked up a double-double from Callie Whetstonewith 13 kills and 13 blocks and the Lions won three sets to one tonight at Lindenwood University. Individual set scores were 25-20, 21-25, 25-16 and 25-20.
Southern (7-21, 4-16 MIAA) was led offensively from Whetstone as the junior had possibly her best match yet as a Lion with 13 kills and 13 blocks, hitting .409 and scoring 22.5 points in the match. Katie Politte added 16 kills and hit .317, while Abby Finder dished out 38 assists. Katie Wiele (pictured) had a team-high 12 digs in the match, while Krishna Merriman finished with eight kills.
Lindenwood (5-23, 2-18 MIAA) was led offensively by 21 kills from Shannon Doyle. Kayla Guyot and Alex Dahlstrom had 13 and 10 kills, respectively.
The first set saw 12 tied scores and nine lead changes with the Lions holding on for the win. The final three sets, however, were one-sided with only two ties and one lead change from there on out.
The Lions will be back in action this week as the team will finish off the regular season at home against Pittsburg State on Tuesday and the finale on Saturday against Southwest Baptist. The match on Tuesday will be part of the State Farm Trophy Series with the Lions getting a chance to secure a point in the series with a win. First-serve from Young Gym is slated for 7 pm.
